This week students in Mr. Keith Todd’s US History classes have visited the Rogers Historic Museum to experience the current exhibition Last Call: History of Alcohol in the Ozarks. You might ask, ‘Why are the students visiting such an exhibition, are they learning about distilling?’ Not at all, that would be more in line with Mrs. Wasserman’s Chemistry class. They are, however, learning about the Prohibition era 1920-1933, when the United States prohibited the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages.
Serena Barnett, Executive Director of the Rogers Historical Museum, welcomed students to the Museum and provided an overview of the exhibition explaining the cause and effects prohibition had not just on the country, but the state of Arkansas as well as Benton County. The exhibition provides a historic timeline of alcohol laws in Northwest Arkansas from the 1800’s to today.
As an arts integration project students will use Media Arts standards combined with their study of font style, language and imagery from the prohibition era to create a convincing label for a spirit from the time. The exhibition will have its “Last Call” on November 9th.
