Today AAA’s 4th grade class visited the Peel House Museum and Heritage Gardens to participate in the annual School Days event! School Days is a free educational program offered to all 4th grade classes throughout Northwest Arkansas to experience what life was like during the 1800s in Arkansas!
Students visit educational stations located throughout the grounds of the Peel Museum & Botanical Gardens where they learn from local museums, artists, and volunteers that provide hands-on activities. Some of the stations included a blacksmithing demonstration with Sioux Creek Forge, Native American History with museum educators from the Museum of Native American History, and Arkansas History & Symbols with Shiloh Museum.
Students also toured the historic Peel House and learn about Samuel Peel and his family, who built the house in 1875 and lived in it until 1906. The tour guides invited students into the various rooms, including Samuel Peel’s study, and discovered artifacts of the era such as Mr. Peel’s portable desk and handwritten letters. The Parlor room was decorated by Emmaline Peel, a location where guests of the Peel family were received and entertained. The Peel family also had apple orchards on the property. The Bentonville Garden Club led students through a small orchard where students learned about Arkansas being a leading producer in the apple industry prior to the 1930’s.
Over 1300 students will visit the Peel House Museum this week for School Days. To learn more about the Peel House Museum visit https://www.peelcompton.org/visit-peel/
